Do you work out?

Honest answer, it moves the coat. Most men carry about 8 inches between chest and shoulders; men who lift carry 10. Shoulders cannot be altered, so the coat is picked for the shoulders and the waist is taken in.

Everybody knows their jeans. Dress pants run a size up from your jeans waist, and the outseam the shop measures is your jeans length plus about 9.

Think of where your belt goes. Most men wear it a little below the belly button: that is Average. Down on the hips, or under the belly, is Low. At the belly button or higher is High.

Jacket
Your chest measurement in inches. The tag inside a jacket says something like 44R: 44 is the chest.
Length
The R in 44R. Short, Regular, Long or Extra long. It is set by your height and your arm length, not your weight: the coat is picked so the sleeve lands right.
Waist
Where the pants sit, in inches. Modern pants sit below the hip, so this is usually 6 to 8 less than your jacket size. Rental pants have an adjustable waistband with about three inches of play, so we show a span like 36–39: one pair covers all of it.
Inseam
The inside leg: from the crotch seam down to the bottom of the pant. Rental pants are hemmed to you in the store, so "about 32" is close enough.
Outseam
The outside leg. Tux shops measure it on you, from the top of your hip bone down to where your shoe heel meets the sole. It is the inseam plus the rise, so it runs about 9 to 10 inches longer than the inseam. The store takes this one when they hem your pants.
Rise
How high your pants sit: the distance from the crotch seam up to the top of the waistband. Most men today wear their belt a little below the belly button, about 9 to 10 inches of rise. Pants worn down on the hips sit about an inch lower; pants worn at the belly button, the old-school way, about an inch higher. Answer the belt question in the fine-tune row and the outseam follows.
Neck
Around your neck where the collar buttons, in half sizes. The first number on a dress shirt tag, like 16.5.
Sleeve
From the middle of the back of your neck, over the shoulder, down to the wrist. The second number on the tag, like 34/35.
